Snow warning for Toronto and most of the Toronto metropolitan area

A snow warning has been issued by Environment Canada for the city of Toronto and southern Peel, Halton and Durham regions.

The weather agency is predicting "significant snowfall" of up to 15 centimeters on Friday, with the heaviest possible in areas near Lake Ontario.

"Light snow is expected to begin this morning, but will intensify in the late afternoon or evening," the warning said. "Late tonight, the snowfall will decrease from west to east."

According to meteorological experts, the snowfall will reach its maximum around 5 or 6 in the afternoon and midnight. Up to 15 cm of snow is expected for the areas near the lake, and areas in the northern part of the Toronto metropolitan area will face less snowfall of around 8 cm. Toronto saw just 12 inches of snow from December to early March, meaning Friday's storm could be the worst since the beginning of winter.

Snow will taper off overnight and the storm will end around 5 a.m. Saturday.

The maximum temperature for Friday is 2 degrees Celsius, which will feel around minus 9 degrees Celsius with wind chill.

Toronto's Pearson Airport also warned of possible flight delays and cancellations due to the upcoming storm.
