New hope for reducing crime and violence in British Columbia
The federal government of Canada has passed a new law that will make it harder to get bail, and the British Columbia government has welcomed the move.
Nikki Sharma, the provincial attorney general, said many of the new reforms are based on B.C. proposals and are aimed at making the streets safer.
The issue of parole in the province, especially in the Vancouver area, has become a contentious issue due to recidivism among some offenders.
Under the new law, parole will be much more difficult to grant in cases of violent and repeat offenses, and the accused will have to prove they deserve to be released.
Police will also not be able to release someone if they pose a danger to the public or victims. Sharma stressed that the changes will help reduce recidivism and violence and prevent dangerous criminals from returning to the streets.
