Most Torontonians are opposed to the new name of Young-Dundes Square
More than two-thirds of Torontonians oppose the new name of Young Dundes Square, according to a new poll. A recent poll by Liaison Strategies shows widespread disapproval of the city's public to change the name of the square to Sankofa Square, with 71 percent of all respondents not in favor of the move.
Last month, the city council voted 19 to 2 to rename Young Dundes Square. The council also voted 17 to 4 to rename Dundes Station and Dundes West Station. A previous Liaison poll in October showed 54 percent of city residents were in favor of renaming Dundes, although at the time people were concerned about the cost. They did not know how to do this. But after being informed of its cost estimate, this figure was reduced to 42%.
According to reports, the cost of renaming this highway and other landmarks that bear its name is estimated at $12.7 million.
Sankofa, the new name chosen for Young-Dundes Square, is taken from the country of Ghana and expresses the concept that a person should look at his past in order to prepare for the future; By implication, the word means, "Go back and use it."
