Montrealers are worried about the decline of public transportation services
The people of Montreal, concerned about the unstable financial situation of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), took to the streets in a demonstration in the city center to remind the authorities of the importance of increasing the budget for this sector.
It has recently been announced that due to financial difficulties, the STM intends to significantly reduce its services if it does not receive additional funding from the provincial government. According to reports, if this happens, the Montreal metro will likely close at 11 p.m. every day and open at 9 a.m. on weekends. Additionally, bus services will be limited, and some routes will be eliminated.
Social and environmental organizations, unions, student associations, and citizens gathered in front of the office of Chantal Rouleau, Quebec's Minister of Transport, to express their dissatisfaction with the insufficient budget for the transportation sector. A spokesperson for the Quebec Solidarity Party emphasized that, despite the political considerations, Françoise Lugo is not increasing the transportation budget, while this issue is vital for all citizens. The Quebec transportation sector is facing a budget shortfall of $2.5 billion over the next 5 years.
