Manitoba premier says conservation officers to help patrol Canada-U.S. border
Manitoba's premier has announced that conservation officers will be involved in patrolling efforts along the Canada-US border.
Manitoba Premier Webb Kino said the officers act as the eyes and ears of police and other security agencies and can also assist in humanitarian efforts to rescue people.
He cited a case in 2022 when a family from India froze to death in a snowstorm in Manitoba while trying to cross the border.
Kino believes that beefing up border security can address concerns raised by the United States and protect Manitoba's economy.
US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose broad tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods if border security is not improved.
Alberta Premier Daniel Smith has previously hinted that he might set up a Border Patrol unit in Alberta that would act like a fugitive task force.
