Majority of Canadians want a nationwide ban on sports betting commercials: poll
Almost 60% of Canadians believe a nationwide ban on sports betting advertising should be implemented immediately, according to a new poll.
A poll by Maru Public Opinion found that seven in 10 Canadians want athletes and celebrities banned from sports betting ads, while 66 percent think ads during live sporting events should be banned.
The majority, 75% of the surveyed people, believe that young people should be protected from this type of advertising and marketing, and 72% fear that many young people will get heavily into debt with online sports betting.
One in six Canadians have placed a bet on a professional sporting event or game on an online betting platform, with 33% of young Canadians making up the figure, compared to 17% for those aged 35 to 54. This figure was 27% among men and 7% among women.
A quarter of survey participants said betting on sports made them more likely to watch sports.
Sports betting became legal in Canada in 2021, but is illegal in 12 US states
