Liberals sign school food deal with Newfoundland and Labrador
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government has signed an agreement to expand school meal programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. The province will be the first province to sign up for the federal government's national school meal program. In the latest budget, the Trudeau government will spend $1 billion over Dedicated five years to expanding access to provincial school meals after the NDP pressured the Liberals to fund the program.
As part of the deal, Newfoundland and Labrador will receive about $9.1 million over three years. The government says the money will allow the province to expand school meal programs to an additional 4,100 children this year. A government official says the tribes First Nations on reserve have received funding for this year, but no details have yet been released. This report was first published by The Canadian Press on September 4, 2024.
