Heading back to school to change your career? Do your homework first, experts say
Going back to school to change careers is a decision that experts say requires careful consideration of financial, emotional and career aspects.
According to the Canadian Press, many people are looking to change careers after years of working in one field, and retraining is the best way to go. One example is Daniel Bouchard, a 31-year-old golfer from Canada who decided to study environmental engineering after seven years in the insurance industry due to monotony and lack of interest.
Experts like Sangeeta Dixit, a career coach in Toronto, emphasize that people should go through several important steps before entering university: identifying a new career path that fits their abilities and values, examining the realities of the job market, assessing their financial ability and assessing their mental readiness to accept the change.
They warn that without considering these factors, people are likely to face more serious problems than in their current job. However, the experience of many adult students shows that, despite financial and time constraints, entering a new field can ultimately create new career opportunities.
