Father and son killed in 'targeted' shooting in Edmonton, police say
Homicide detectives are investigating a shooting that took place Thursday afternoon in southeast Edmonton, resulting in the tragic deaths of a father and his young son.
Edmonton police reported that officers responded to a shooting outside a business in the area of 50 Street and Ellerslie Road in southeast Edmonton around noon.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 41-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy in medical distress. Unfortunately, both the man and the child succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the scene.
"We are sad to report that a child lost their life today as a result of this violent event," stated Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey with the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section in a news release. "The loss or injury of children as a result of gunfire is unfathomable, and we urge anyone with information that may assist this investigation to come forward as soon as possible."
The police have classified the deaths as suspicious, emphasizing that "detectives have determined this was a targeted event."
Authorities also mentioned a nearby vehicle fire that may be linked to the incident. The vehicle was found in the area of 34th Street and Township Road 510, north of Beaumont in Edmonton, according to the police.
