Dissatisfied Liberal MPs plan to ask PM Trudeau to step aside at next caucus meeting
A group of Liberal MPs, who have been organizing for the past ten days, plan to directly ask Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau to step down as leader at a meeting next Wednesday. This request was raised due to dissatisfaction with the performance of the party in the recent mid-term elections and the management of these failures.
Some Liberal MPs told CTV News on condition of anonymity that their main goal is to keep the discussions confidential and to reflect the collective sentiment about the need for Trudeau to step aside for the benefit of the party in the next election. They also plan to express their frustration with the way electoral defeats were handled in key areas such as Toronto and Montreal.
Although some representatives have indicated there is an official letter asking Trudeau to step down, many have not yet confirmed that the letter was signed.
Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather stressed in an interview that these discussions should be held within the party without media involvement, adding that he would support whoever is the leader of his party, but that holding a "robust group discussion" about the leadership He considered the party necessary.
On the other hand, some government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, have said that removing Trudeau from the leadership is not on the table for now. Trudeau, in response to questions about the internal rebellion in the party, has emphasized that the government should focus on defending Canada's sovereignty at this moment.
