Decrease in gun crimes in Montreal compared to last summer
According to the Montreal Police (SPVM), the number of crimes related to firearms in the summer of this year has decreased compared to the same period last year. From June 1st to September 30th of this year, only 35 criminal shooting incidents with firearms were reported in Montreal, which indicates a decrease compared to 43 similar incidents in the previous year.
The Montreal Police have released this information and expressed hope that this positive trend will continue in the last four months of the year.
Furthermore, the number of murder cases has also decreased in the summer of this year, from 8 cases to 5 cases, and attempted murders have decreased from 20 cases to 13 cases.
David Shine, the spokesperson for the Montreal Police, emphasizes the importance of measuring the number of firearm-related incidents and has reported the police's satisfaction with this decrease.
During the summer of this year, the Montreal Police managed to apprehend 133 individuals in connection with firearms and discovered and seized more than 258 firearms. Since the beginning of 2023, 637 firearms have been discovered and seized, whereas this number was 453 in the previous year.
Additionally, from the beginning of this year to the present, 372 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered to the police, while this number was 314 in the previous year. These figures indicate an increase in the number of voluntarily surrendered firearms to the police.
In general, these data show that the security measures and the police's pursuit and apprehension efforts have contributed to a reduction in crimes involving firearms and an increase in public safety.
