Death threat leads to calls for Ontario politician to resign
A threatening voicemail has prompted calls for the resignation of a Clarington, Ontario, councillor.
Retired police detective Tom Dingwall told CTV News he received a 39-second message from a woman he identified as Corinna Trail, a councillor who threatened to kill and abuse his wife.
Dingwall said the threat came as he was running for mayor of Clarington next year. The message asked him to step down in favor of his potential challenger, Joe Neil.
Trail, a human rights and family law lawyer, has been on Clarington council since 2010. He called the incident “unpleasant” and said he could not comment further at this time.
The incident has raised concerns about the rise of “toxic behaviour” in local politics. Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has warned that the process could discourage qualified candidates from running. He also called for stronger legal tools to deal with offending councillors, and supported the Ontario government’s Bill 9, which would allow councils to remove offending councillors.
