Canadian soccer great Christine Sinclair announces retirement from international play

After guiding the Canadian national team to a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021, Captain Christine Sinclair came to a realization. She stated, "After Tokyo, deep in my heart, I knew I didn't want to play in Paris," referring to the 2024 Olympics. "The way Tokyo ended, you can't script it. I just wanted one more shot at the World Cup because I truly believed that we could be successful in it, and it's been a long time since we've been successful at World Cups."
However, this wish didn't materialize. Canada returned home early from Australia this year and didn't make it to the knockout stage of the World Cup. It was Sinclair who continued and, with her help, Canada secured a spot in the Paris Olympics by winning the return game against Jamaica with a final score of 4-1 in the group stage last month. But she announced that she would retire from international soccer at the end of this year.
She told The Canadian Press, "I can sit here and know that I've truly given everything I could and given everything I had from my national team when I was 16. I have no regrets about what I've done and what I've put into it. I know I've given everything I possibly could. The team can move forward in good hands."
