Canada's voluntary AI code of conduct is coming — not everyone is enthused

Companies working with artificial intelligence in Canada are being offered a new voluntary code of conduct on how to use and develop advanced generative artificial intelligence in the country.

And while there has already been support from the business community, there are also concerns that it could stifle innovation and the ability to compete with companies based outside of Canada.

Advanced Generative AI often refers to types of AI that can generate content. ChatGPT is a popular example, but most systems that produce audio, video, images, or text also count.
Companies that sign the code agree to several principles, including that their AI systems are transparent about where and how the collected information is used, and that there are methods to deal with possible bias in a system.

In addition, they agree to human oversight of AI systems, and developers who build generative AI systems for public use create systems so that anything produced by their system can be identified.
