Canada's serial killer was eligible for parole
Famous Canadian serial killer Bruce MacArthur is eligible for parole after serving 25 years of his life sentence.
In 2018, MacArthur was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the next 25 years for the murder of 8 men, including Soroush Mahmoudi and Majid Kayhan.
However, under Canadian law, after 25 years, prisoners can apply for parole.
Prosecutors in this case wanted a minimum sentence of 50 years in prison for McArthur so that he would have no possibility of parole, but the judge opposed this request.
In his verdict, the judge emphasized that McArthur committed eight murders with planning and intention, and even by filming the victims and recording it on a personal computer, he intended to enjoy watching his crimes again in the future.
But, because the killer accepted responsibility for his crimes and avoided a long and painful trial for the victims' survivors, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
MacArthur's conditional release does not mean his full release.
He will be under strict supervision and must comply with conditions, such as not contacting the victims' families and not being in places where they are likely to be.
The families of the victims are outraged by the judge's decision and believe that MacArthur should never be released.
They say he is a danger to society and that his release would put other people's lives at risk.
It remains unclear whether MacArthur will eventually be released.
The parole board must decide on his application.
