Canada topped the U.S. in a new passport ranking but we still slipped in the standings
The Canadian passport remains one of the most powerful and prestigious in the world, but it has slipped one spot in the latest Henley Passport Index. The report, based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks the Canadian passport in eighth place this year, up from seventh last year.
The main indicator of the ranking is the number of countries that passport holders can travel to without a visa. This year’s edition looked at 199 passports and 227 destinations. According to the report, Canadian passport holders can travel to 184 countries without a visa, a ranking shared by Canada with Estonia and the United Arab Emirates.
By comparison, the United States passport is in tenth place, offering visa-free access to 182 countries. The United States has fallen two spots since last year.
Despite the high prestige of the Canadian passport, citizens of the country still need a visa or e-visa to enter some destinations, such as China, India, Pakistan, Cuba, Algeria, Brazil, Venezuela and Vietnam.
At the top of the list, Singapore still holds the title of the most powerful passport in the world, allowing visa-free travel to 193 countries. Japan and South Korea are in second place with free access to 190 countries. European countries such as Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain all share third place with access to 189 countries.
Although the Canadian passport is no longer in the top five, it still offers significant benefits to its holders. This is while citizens of countries such as Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq face significant restrictions on international travel.
