Canada and Mexico unite to fight Trump tariffs
Canada and Mexico are aligned in their opposition to former US President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs, according to a new poll by Leger. The poll, conducted between March 26 and 31, 2025, found that a majority of Canadians (81%) and Mexicans (76%) have a negative view of Trump, and about half of Canadians (43%) and Mexicans (35%) view the United States as an “enemy country.” Russia is the top enemy for Canadians (60%).
### Reaction to Trump’s Trade Tariffs
- **Support for retaliation**: 70% of Canadians and 62% of Mexicans support imposing “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs on the US.
- **Economic impact**: 87% of Canadians and 84% of Mexicans believe Trump’s tariffs have had a negative impact on their economies, while only 52% of Americans share this view.
- **Reduced purchases of American goods**: 72% of Canadians have reduced domestic purchases and 70% have reduced online purchases of American products.
### Attitudes to trade agreement renewal
Despite the tensions, majorities of Mexicans (76%), Americans (53%) and Canadians (52%) favor renewing the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA) next year. Sebastien Dallaire, an analyst at Leger, sees this as a sign of the importance of the trade relationship with the United States.
### Other findings
- **Attitudes to America**: More discontent is directed at Trump than the United States as a whole.
- **Mark Carney**: Only 46% of Canadians have a positive view of the liberal leader, while most Americans and Mexicans do not know him.
- **Top Concerns**: Tariffs are the top priority for Canadians (38%), while organized crime is more important for Mexicans (31%) and inflation (27%) for Americans.
The poll was conducted with 1,628 Canadians, 1,013 Americans and 1,003 Mexicans and has a margin of error of less than 3.1%.
