Arrest made in fatal shooting of Mohawk College student struck by stray bullet in Hamilton

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an international student in Hamilton in April, and police are still searching for several other suspects.

Hamilton police said Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old Mohawk College student of Indian descent, was killed by a stray bullet during an exchange of gunfire between two groups on Upper James Street in Hamilton on April 17.

At a news conference Thursday, police said a fight had broken out in the area before the shooting.

“The fight lasted for several minutes and ended up leading to the shooting, just as he (Harsimrat) got there,” Acting Detective Darrell Reed told reporters.

On Aug. 5, a 32-year-old man was arrested in Niagara Falls in connection with the shooting. He faces one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.

“The investigation indicates that at least seven people were involved in the altercation that resulted in the death,” Reid added.

He stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that police are working to identify and arrest other suspects at the scene.

“The investigation is fully underway and we will do everything we can to identify, locate and arrest all individuals involved in this incident. We believe there are other individuals who have important information that they should come forward with.”

Reid noted that the suspect had connections to the Halton, Hamilton and Niagara regions and was known to travel between these areas through short-term rentals.

Police would not comment on the cause of the altercation between the two groups.

“The motive behind this altercation is an important part of the court process and no further information can be released at this time,” Reid said.
