All systems go: Canada's first commercial space launch to take off from St. Lawrence Friday
Canada’s first commercial space launch will take place Friday from St. Lawrence, Newfoundland. Ontario-based aerospace company NordSpace will launch its Taiga, a six-meter-tall, 3D-printed test rocket, into space.
The launch is a suborbital one, and the rocket will land in the Atlantic Ocean after about a minute of flight. The launch, which was postponed from Monday due to weather conditions, is scheduled to take place around 6:30 a.m. local time, with another launch window set for noon if it fails.
NordSpace CEO Rahul Goyal called the mission the culmination of years of hard work and investment, and expressed hope that the launch will be successful. St. Lawrence Mayor Kevin Pittman also described the event as an opportunity to boost tourism and create jobs in the region.
NordSpace, founded in 2022, plans to launch another suborbital launch next year and put its larger Tundra rocket into orbit in 2027. The company also plans to build a second launch pad and expand infrastructure in the St. Lawrence.
