After multiple data breaches, Yahoo settled a class-action lawsuit. The deadline to file compensation claims is approaching
Yahoo has settled a class action lawsuit after several data breaches. The deadline for filing a claim for compensation will end soon. Yahoo and Rogers customers in Canada have until the end of this month to apply for up to $375 in cash from the data breach settlement.
Eligible individuals must apply online by December 27 to receive their share of the $20 million settlement.
When did the Yahoo data breaches occur?
Yahoo's data breaches occurred between 2013 and 2016. On December 14, 2016, Yahoo disclosed the breach that occurred in 2013. It also announced on September 22, 2016 that another breach occurred in 2014. In February 2017, it revealed the violations related to 2015 and 2016.
Yahoo announced that criminal hackers targeted its computer systems and gained unauthorized access to personal information of Yahoo users and others. Rogers customers may also be affected because their email accounts use Yahoo!
The lawsuit alleges that Yahoo had insufficient security measures to protect users' information and delayed notifying those potentially affected by the breach.
The settlement agreement was signed on June 9, 2020.
Yahoo and Yahoo Canada have denied any wrongdoing or liability.
What can eligible people claim?
Eligible individuals may apply for one of the following:
Up to $125 per data breach, with a maximum of $375 in total
Credit monitoring services for up to one year, plus cash reimbursement for personal expenses up to $25,000 and up to 25% of the cost of paid services such as ad-free or Yahoo Premium email and Yahoo/Abaco small business services
Who is eligible?
To be eligible, you must have had a Yahoo or Rogers account as a resident of Canada between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016 and have not opted out of this class action.
According to a statement released Monday by Toronto-based law firm Charney:
"Payments may be reduced if the number of valid applications exceeds the available budget."
"Canadians who do not opt out and file an application will not receive any money and will lose the right to receive money in the future."
How to register a request?
Applicants can view a copy of the settlement agreement and file their claim online.
They can also call toll-free at 1-866-808-8075 for more information.
According to the settlement notice, it may take more than a year for all requests to be processed before payments are made.
