A new, fast-growing wildfire threatens lands in northeastern British Columbia
Near Lone Prairie, approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Chetwynd and 80 kilometers southwest of Fort St. John, a wildfire is currently burning. On Tuesday, the Peace River Regional District issued an evacuation alert for the Doe-John address and properties in the vicinity of Highway 97, west of the Chetwynd Pulp Mill Road, and east of the Guillet Subdivision.
Following the discovery of a forest fire that expanded to seven square kilometers on Monday, properties near Chetwynd in the Peace Region of British Columbia are under an evacuation alert. The Mount Wartenbe fire has previously been considered a significant wildfire by the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS), meaning it is highly visible or a potential threat to public safety.
An evacuation alert means that residents must be prepared to leave their properties on short notice if the fire spreads. Wildfire activity across the province has decreased over the past month, but the continued hot and dry conditions in several areas, particularly in the northeast, have maintained the wildfire risk. Mount Wartenbe is the only significant wildfire in the province following a period with no wildfires. BCWS has deployed 15 fire crews to the Mount Wartenbe fire. Five helicopters are providing assistance, and five pieces of heavy equipment are on-site.
