86,000 Volkswagen, Audi vehicles recalled in Canada over fire risk

According to a statement sent by Volkswagen Canada, more than 80,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles in Canada are being recalled due to a fire hazard caused by a jet pump seal located inside the fuel tanks.
Volkswagen Canada said a mechanical problem with the pump seal caused fuel to leak from the charcoal canisters into the exhaust system.
Affected vehicles include the front-wheel drive 2015-20 Audi A3 sedan, the 2019-20 Volkswagen Jetta GLI and the 2015-2019 Golf Sport Wagon.
This car manufacturer explained: Our estimate is that less than one percent of the damaged cars have this defect. However, Volkswagen takes the safety of its customers very seriously and as a result is recalling the vehicles listed below, as well as some 2015-2020 Golf models.
   The recall affects 86,308 units in Canada. However, according to Volkswagen Canada, there have been no known cases of fires, crashes or injuries as a result of the problem.
The company says that when replacement parts are available, customers will be notified directly and can replace the intake jet pump in their vehicle at no additional cost.
"Any customer experiencing a problem with their fuel system prior to receiving a recall notice should contact their dealer directly," Volkswagen Canada added in a statement.
In the U.S., the automaker is recalling more than 261,000 vehicles for the same problem, according to a statement released Thursday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall covers models manufactured between 2015 and 2020, including the Volkswagen Golf, GTI, Audi A3s, Golf Sportwagons and Volkswagen Jetta. All these recalled models have front-wheel drive.
The recall report says the vehicles not included in the recall are those with all-wheel drive functionality.
The recall comes after US safety regulators began investigating the problem last year after 79 complaints of fuel leaks.
Although Volkswagen said in a statement that it has had 1,410 warranty claims since May 2016, the statement says no fires have been reported related to the mechanical problem.
