473 Canadian athletes were sent to the Pan American Games in Chile
"A team of 473 athletes representing Canada will participate in the upcoming Pan American Game in Santiago, Chile. The Pan American Games, a quadrennial event with over 6,000 athletes from 41 countries across the Americas and the Caribbean, will open on October 20 and conclude on November 5.
The Canadian Olympic Committee has announced that 235 support staff will also join the Canadian athletes. The Pan American Games serve as a preliminary stage in 21 of the 39 Olympic sports disciplines, where athletes strive to qualify for the Olympics.
In 2019, in Lima, Peru, Canada secured 152 medals, including 35 gold medals, ranking third in the competition, following the United States and Brazil. The Pan American Games serve as an incredible showcase for earning a place in the hearts and minds of Canadians, and we eagerly await how these athletes will inspire us and earn their quota for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Fyfe Faziiu Ebert, 13 years old, a skateboarder from Toronto, is the youngest Canadian athlete. Beth Andershill, a 61-year-old equestrian from Ontario, is the oldest athlete in this group. She had participated in the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, in the show jumping competition.
The leader of the Canadian delegation, Christian Gerard, secured Canada's first Olympic gold medal in weightlifting, six years after winning a bronze medal in 2012. Two previous competitors in his weight class had been disqualified from receiving their medals due to doping.
Gerard, 38 years old and from Quebec, has represented Canada in three Pan American Games. In 2011, in Guadalajara, Mexico, he managed to win the gold medal in his weight category.
Gerard says, 'Since I was assigned the role of team leader earlier this year, my excitement has increased with each new team member and name added to the list of Team Canada for the 2023 Santiago Games. Each of these 473 athletes has their own unique stories and specific goals that are aligned with the values of our country, Canada.'
The Para Pan American Games for Paralympic athletes will also take place from November 17 to 26 in Santiago."
