Two student pilots dead after planes collide near Steinbach, TSB investigating

Two student pilots have died after two planes collided near Steinbeck, Manitoba, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said on Tuesday morning during a training flight.

Adam Penner, co-owner of Harv’s Air Flight School, said the two student pilots were practicing landing two single-engine planes at the same time when the incident occurred. “It’s very difficult, we’re a small family here and all the students and staff are very affected by this,” he added.

Police said they were called to the crash at 8:45 a.m. in the rural Hanover area. Police, fire and emergency services responded to the scene and found the wreckage of two small planes, a Cessna 152 and a Cessna 172, south of Steinbeck.

The students were practicing touch and go when the incident occurred, Penner said. Sadly, both pilots died at the scene and there were no passengers on board.

The names of the victims have not yet been released and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has launched an investigation into the incident.
