Carney, Trump talk ‘new’ trade and security relationship
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed the new trade and security relationship in a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday. Government sources described the call as a “substantive and lengthy conversation.”
The talks are the latest attempt to ease tensions in the trade war between the two countries, which began in February with Trump’s unilateral tariffs on Canadian goods and has escalated to 35 percent. Canada has responded with counter-tariffs and restrictions, such as removing U.S. products from liquor stores.
Although the two sides have yet to reach an agreement, the call between Carney and Trump could signal the two countries’ determination to find a new path ahead of a 2026 revision of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
