Bear sightings in Sudbury

As the weather cools down and autumn arrives, bears are once again being spotted around the town of Sadbury. Erica Shimon shared pictures of a large black bear in the "Moon Glow" neighborhood in the South End area on Tuesday morning. In an email, she expressed her concern, saying, "I'm worried about the kids who will soon be waiting for the bus on that side of the street."
One bear was seen on the move towards her garage in the Crescent and Moon Rock area at 8 AM on October 10th. Over the past week, a group of mature bears has been observed, and two groups of them have been spotted. According to Ontario's Bear Wise program, not every bear sighting is an emergency. You should only call 911 or the police if the bear poses an immediate threat to your personal safety and displays aggressive or invasive behaviors.
The following conditions can warrant an emergency call if you spot a bear:
1. A bear enters a schoolyard while students are present.
2. It follows people.
3. It enters a building or tries to enter a building.
4. It acts aggressively in a public gathering.
5. It kills domestic animals or pets.
For non-emergency situations, you can report them by calling 1-866-514-2327. This includes situations where a bear:
1. Is loitering around, checking garbage cans.
2. Enters an area with stored garbage or food.
3. Destroys bird feeders or bird food, or knocks over barbecues.
4. Loiters in a yard or on a property without leaving.
Pet owners are advised to leash their dogs, as free-roaming dogs can provoke defensive reactions from black bears.
