Alberta government details plan to counter federal gun buyback plan
EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Daniel Smith says more details will be released today about his government’s plan to counter the federal government’s gun buyback plan.
Smith announced at the annual United Conservative Party conference over the weekend that his government plans to introduce a resolution that, if passed, would prevent the province from enforcing federal laws or prosecuting people under them.
He told reporters Monday that Alberta Justice Minister Mickey Emery will provide more details at a news conference this afternoon.
The resolution is set to be introduced under the Alberta Sovereignty in a United Canada Act, a law that allows the provincial government to opt out of some federal laws.
The federal government has banned hundreds of assault rifles and has instituted a voluntary gun buyback program.
Smith says Albertans should not be prosecuted for defending their homes and families, and insists the law should focus on “low-level criminals.”
This report was first published by The Canadian Press on December 2, 2025.
